Mining Engineering

Mining recovers the wealth of the world's resources to meet global demand both from the surface and underground.

Mining engineers apply principles of environmental, civil, mechanical, chemical, computer, and electrical engineering to the discovery, design, and operation of a resource. They use modeling, computational, and design software to create massive 3-D models of the resource that they are attempting to recover.

As a mining engineer, you might work for mining companies, consulting firms, contractors, government agencies, or mining equipment supply companies anywhere in the world.

Research topics include:

  • Geostatistics
  • Geomechanics
  • Material transportation
  • Equipment and gravel interaction
  • Structural damage to mobile equipment
  • Geotechnical and engineering geology
