Smith, Dan PhD, PEng, DEE

Environmental engineering professor Dan Smith won the annual cold regions engineering award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, in May 2004.

He was recognized for his work on cold climate utilities, especially drinking water and sewage. He has focused on how toxic materials and heavy metals cause child development problems.

Smith was also recipient of the 2003 Environmental Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).

Smith was a founder of both the ASCE's Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering, and the Cold Regions Engineering Division of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers.

He is the Canada Research Chair in environmental engineering at the U of A, and director of environmental engineering and sciences.
