The Faculty of Engineering is comprised of different departments offering a variety of engineering disciplines and programs.

Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering facilitates the application of engineering and science to the study of medical problems and offers research opportunities and courses leading to MSc and PhD degrees. Its primary areas of research are magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and rehabilitation engineering. Administered jointly by the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, the department is located in the health sciences complex of the U of A campus with leading-edge research laboratories and offices in a number of buildings, including the University of Alberta Hospital.

Civil and Environmental Engineering & School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering offer both undergraduate and graduate students some of the finest instruction and facilities in North America. The department has more than 950 undergraduate and 400 graduate students and has 10 specialized research areas.

Chemical and Materials Engineering
The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering attracts some of the best and brightest people from around the world. The department’s 52 professors are renowned researchers and award-winning teachers who are educating 645 undergraduate and 273 graduate students.

Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers undergraduate programs in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and engineering physics. With 61 professors who are also respected researchers, the Department serves 600 undergraduates and 355 graduate students.

Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a diverse educational experience with a focus on traditional areas such as manufacturing and design, as well as in emerging areas such as biomedical engineering, emissions reduction technology, nanotechnology, interfacial phenomena, and sustainable energy. Our department is home to more than 700 undergraduate students, 250 graduate students and more than 40 professors.

Engineering Co-op Program and Engineering Employment Centre
The Engineering Co-op program offers Engineering students the opportunity to gain valuable, paid professional engineering experience while working towards an engineering degree. Our Employment Centre supports current students and alumni with job postings and holds workshops to help build job-hunting skills.
