Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering
We can have a transformative impact on healthcare and life sciences by applying engineering principles to the development of new technology and treatment solutions. Because it is interdisciplinary in nature, biomedical engineering advances knowledge in engineering, biology and medicine, and improves human health and biotechnology through cross-disciplinary studies that integrate the engineering sciences with biomedical sciences.
Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment
We make new discoveries and advance new technologies to meet the challenges of balancing increasing world energy demands and environmental stewardship. Alberta’s oil sands represent one of the world’s largest oil reserves but present unique and urgent technological, energy and environmental challenges. We are committed to new discoveries in traditional and alternative energy sources and the development of innovative technologies and approaches to environmental protection and remediation.
Information and Communications Technologies
We imagine where technology can go, then take it there with the intent of disrupting conventional thinking and practices. We are undertaking ground-breaking research that makes science fiction engineered reality, altering the way information is managed, shared, stored, protected and presented. Interdisciplinary research allows us to develop and apply new algorithms and information management strategies—even new materials—to meet society’s ever-changing communications needs.
Nanotechnology and Interfacial Engineering
We are at the frontier of a new field, bringing together the disciplines of engineering, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine to create radically new materials and exploit new properties. Nanotechnology is the application and manipulation of structures as small as the diameter of strand of DNA. Exploring the never-before seen behaviour of materials at these length scales presents new technology opportunities in virtually every field.
